Airfare Wars Stimulate Online Demand

HEAVILY discounted airfares are stimulating consumer demand with Webjet’s transaction numbers increasing 19% for the six months to December 31, 2008. Managing Director David Clarke predicts the momentum will persist. “Early holiday period January bookings have continued, strongly driven by early commencement of our media marketing campaign for 2009 on the Seven Network.”

These ads play on the discount airfare environment and the fact that Webjet’s aggregator model allows consumers to compare fares across several carriers. Clarke claimed the results indicate Webjet is taking market share from online rivals. Travel Trends: January 6, 2009
