Climbing Uluru Could Be Banned

uluruCLIMBING Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, could be banned under a Federal Government proposal. The Australian reports that a 10 year draft management plan for Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park advocates closing Uluru to climbers for “visitor safety, cultural and environmental reasons”. Local aborigines already object to tourists climbing the rock and have posted signs outlining their opposition. Around 100,000 people still climb Uluru every year. The climbing ban has support from tourism operators and lobby groups. Matt Hingerty from ATEC said: “This proposed plan ban is a realistic one.” The office of Environment Minister Peter Garrett said public feedback would be taken into account before a final decision was made.
