Flight Centre Profit Takes Off

Wow. Don't know what the analysts think of the latest Flight Centre result but it looks pretty good to me with a record before tax profit of almost $120m for the six months to December 31, 2011. The travel retail powerhouse is trading 20%-22% ahead of the same period last year after seven months and is now looking at an increase in full year profit of between 10% to 18%.

An interesting fact running counter to the general economy: Flight Centre's sales staff numbers increased 8% to 11,866 while shop numbers grew to 2313. "At December 31, 80% of FLT's 14,840 people were in sales roles," the company said. It recorded profits in 9 of its 10 regions with the strongest growth coming from Australia, UK, Dubai and Canada. Losses in the US were cut by half to $3.3m.
