Lower Airfares Propel Global Passenger Demand

The real cost of global airfares has fallen 10% over the past year and is the major reason for record airline load factors during February, says the International Air Traffic Association.

Total revenue passenger kilometers rose 4.8%, the underlying growth rate was estimated at 8.6%,  capacity increased 2.7%, and load factor grew 1.6 percentage points to 79.5% – the highest ever recorded for February.

“Momentum from January has continued through February, supported by lower fares and a healthier economic backdrop,” said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

He added IATA has “not seen the attempted US ban on travel from six countries translate into an identifiable traffic trend.”
