Travelzoo, which has 17 million email newsletter subscribers, plans to sell its Asia Pacific division to company founder Ralph Bartel. Travelzoo’s AP businesses reported a loss of US$7.8m in the 12 months to June 30 against revenues of US$1.5m. If the transaction goes ahead, Travelzoo retains an option to buy the Asia Pacific operation back. The move allows the parent company to focus on its US and European operations while maintaining its Asia Pacific operations.

Bartel has not revealed his plans for Asia Pacific but is known to be obsessive about preserving the quality and integrity of the brand. The Travelzoo business is an ad-based travel deals newsletter sent to its massive database each week. It has made great progress in the Australian market, where it has 200,000 subscribers, and also has operations in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, India, Korea and Singapore.
