FOLLOW the money they say. Well, if that’s the case many believe the big business opportunity in the online travel space right now lies in pay per click and affiliate revenue models incorporated into travel planning/mgt websites or mobile applications.

These were the overwhelmingly prevalent themes among the 32 companies that presented at the PhoCusWright Travel Innovation Summit. In some cases the technology was very impressive, though there were few if any that blew the audience away. More like a refinement of trends that have been apparent for quite some time, in particular variations on search. Where do I want to go? What it’s like? Who can get me a deal?

The question though that wasn’t answered is the old chestnut – will these sites/products simple life for travellers? The answer in many cases would have to be no. But the better ones symbolise sexy technology and that may be enough, for now, until a better application comes along. Some companies worth checking out include,,,, and TripChill.
