Diarmuid Russell Commercial Director Lonely Planet smallDiarmuid is the Commercial Director for Lonely Planet.com, with global responsibility for the website’s advertising and e-commerce revenues.

As a passionate fan of the Lonely Planet books, which have served him well in destinations as diverse as Ukraine, Egypt and Vietnam, he’s excited to be leading Lonely Planet’s online commercial activities through the brand’s evolution online into a site that blends the best of Lonely Planet’s own content with contributions from its long-standing digital community and the most useful content from the broader web. 

Diarmuid joined Lonely Planet in November 2007, having previously worked for BBC Worldwide where he played a significant role in the decision to acquire a controlling interest in Lonely Planet.

He previously worked for Expedia as the VP Strategy for their international business from 2000 until 2005 and has also helped advise several early stage web companies in various capacities.

Educated at St Andrews University in Scotland and with an MBA from INSEAD, he currently lives in Melbourne, Australia with his Canadian wife.
