Big Storms Start WInter Early at Mount Hutt

By Martin Kelly, Editor, Travel Trends

6-big-stormsThe good old days have returned to Mount Hutt and other Canterbury, New Zealand, ski fields which have had their biggest early season snow falls in decades.

Storms dumped 170cm of snow in the first two weeks of May and more snow is in the forecast.

Mt Hutt traditionally has the best early season snow in Australasia and years ago used to regularly open in May.

But weather patterns changed and the snow came later – until now, and as a result the race is on to bring the opening to May 30, the earliest in at least 10 years. Travel Trends: May 15,  2009
