It seems Agoda has taken immediate advantage of the controversial Expedia/Wotif commission rise from 12% to 15% by doing exactly the same thing.
Industry group, Accommodation Association of Australia, says several members have got it touch to say they have received calls from Agoda advising of the commission hike from next month.
But it looks like the rate’s not going up for everyone – larger operators with long-term contracts have been spared based on check calls to several major groups.
We sent two emails to Agoda checking this story but have not received a response.
Meanwhile, a story in the Sydney Morning Herald quotes a Victorian operator who confirms the increase.
“Raising a commission from 12 to 15 per cent is really just grabbing an extra 3 per cent of my gross revenue,” said Roger Alexander, who owns the six-bedroom Lorelei B&B in, Portland, Victoria.
Agoda is Southeast Asia’s leading online travel agent and part of the powerful Priceline Group, which also owns global market leader, Booking.com.
