The brinkmanship strategy of American Airlines in pulling its fares from Orbitz last week has clearly worked with the the online travel agent acceding to AA’s commission demands.

On Saturday the carrier’s fares and those of subsidiary US Airways were once again being sold through the online travel agent, the shares of which took a battering following the initial divorce announcement.

The blowup lasted just a few days, the pressure on Orbitz intense, and it shows airlines still hold the power because they own the product without which OTAs would not exist.
