Aggressive and litigious US carrier American Airlines, at the end of a year marked by disputes with Travelport, Sabre and Expedia, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The move will allow it to restructure, albeit without incumbent chairman and CEO, Gerard Arpey, who has ‘retired’ and is being replaced by Thomas Horton.

Meanwhile, embattled Qantas suffered a booking system meltdown this morning forcing staff in some cases to issue hand-written boarding cards.
