A piece of news worth reflecting on: from May 2014 British Airways will be the only European carrier operating services to Australia. This follows Virgin Atlantic’s withdrawal of its Hong Kong-Sydney flights. Tourism Australia says that less than 15 years ago, eight European airlines flew to and from Australia. Now they generally code-share with Asian carriers.
Meanwhile, “Middle Eastern carriers are adding seat capacity, upgrading their aircraft and adding new Australian routes – contributing to an increase in total capacity on the UK-Australia route. For example, Emirates grew its capacity by 16% in the first half of 2103/14 with Australia and the UK the top two contributors to growth.”
