Hotels in the Asia Pacific region have under-performed this year. “The Asia Pacific region reported negative year-to-date 2013 results”, said Elizabeth Winkle, managing director of STR Global.

“In previous months, Southeastern Asia has been the exception to the rule; however, in July, Southeastern Asia reported negative occupancy growth for the first time this year.

“The negative growth is coming from countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. One of the contributing factors was the heavy smog at the end of June and beginning of July which caused many tourists to stay away from these holiday destinations”.
