Travel into and out of Australia continued to grow strongly during August. Departures were up 8% year on year while inbound increased 4%. Italy (+22%), the United Kingdom (+20%) and the United States (+12%) were the fastest growing destinations for travelling Australians over the past 12 months. Thailand was the only established destination to suffer a decrease in Australian visitors, down 0.8%.
China (+14%), Singapore (9.7%), Hong Kong (+8.6%) and Indonesia (+7%) were the best performing inbound markets during August, while Japan’s long term slide continued with visitations falling 7% compared with last year. A number of major markets were flat including the United States, South Korea and New Zealand. The much-hyped Indian market did not make the top 10 list of inbound source markets.
