The always risky campaign by Tourism Australia boss Andrew McEvoy and other industry leaders to say everything is ok in Queensland after the recent Brisbane floods unfiortunately looks like blowing up in their faces with a second tropical storm in a week, Cyclone Yasi, set to slam into the state’s northern coastline, forcing the evacuation of destinations like Hamilton Island and Club Med Lindeman Island. This follows Cyclone Anthony crossing the coast near Bowen on Sunday.
Both storms were brewing well before Mr McEvoy sent out an email late Friday afternoon saying that “with the exception of a few smaller towns tourism across Queensland is open for business”, The message was sent 24 hours after residents across Queensland’s north were warned to prepare for Cyclone Anthony. This news received widespread coverage. Mr McEvoy would have seen it. What was he thinking? There was alsways a strong chance this would happen.
