In an unlikely alliance, Stayz.com.au and Tourism Accommodation Australia have “struck a common position” on regulation of the short-term accommodation sector in New South Wales and have called on the State Government to:
- Introduce restrictions on short-term rentals in residential buildings in metropolitan areas in order to mitigate the effects that such rentals have on housing affordability and accessibility;
- Introduce measures to increase transparency and data-sharing across the entire accommodation sector in order to better inform government and industry planning
- Limit the regulatory impact on regional areas, where short term rentals play an important role in supporting local economies and promoting growth of regional tourism.
- Establish measures to ensure environmental, health, safety and amenity issues are appropriately managed.
The joint manifesto is an industry first with Stayz (Australia’s largest online short-term accommodation site) and TAA (leading hotel lobby group) normally on opposite sides of the debate.
