No-one is denying that New Zealand tourism has done it tough this year with internal (Christchurch earthquake) and external (Queensland floods, Japan tsunami) disasters but it defies logic to also blame the strong Australian dollar for the accommodation industry’s recent poor performance, as NZ Hotel Council boss Jenny Langley has apparently just done. NZ tourism should be happy that $A1 now buys $NZ1.34, the best it’s been for many years and a major incentive for Australian to head across the Tasman this winter. It’s a great marketing opportunity, and must be seen as such, rather than industry leaders turning a positive into a negative.
