Google is taking on some of its biggest customers – Online Travel Agents such Expedia, Priceline, Orbitz – with the launch of Flight Search using technology acquired with its contentious purchase of ITA Software. The product is a direct threat to OTAs as Google Flight Search only scours airline websites for the best airfares. No details yet on the business model, although Google said in a blog post that:
“The selection of flight results is not influenced by any paid relationships. Airlines control how their flights are marketed, so as with other flight search providers, our booking links point to airline websites only. We’re working to create additional opportunities for our other partners in the travel industry to participate as well.” More on this soon.
