HOMO - night concept hotel for MONAWow, here’s the sexy new hotel concept for the Museum of Modern and New Art (MONA), which has been a game-changer for Tasmanian tourism  since opening in 2011 due to its brilliant design and often confronting installations.

There’s no question HOMO (HOtel at MOna) continues those themes and the remarkable plans have been released for public discussion, of which there has been plenty so far.

But that just how MONA founder, David Walsh, likes it.

Here are the details:

“We like building stuff at Mona.

“That’s why we want to build HOMO (HOtel at MOna), a 172 room, 5-star hotel that will sit right next to the current museum. Hanging over the water in fact. We think it can be pretty nice. And let’s be honest, Berriedale could do with a couple of extra accommodation options.

“Berriedale could also do with a stupendously engineered and out-fitted 3-storey public library, to house David’s extensive collection of literature. So we’re building that too.

“And we may as well build an art-of-the-state conference centre, 1075 seat theatre, some extra gallery spaces, an extremely expensive health spa (‘You’ll pay because you’re easily deluded, or because it’s spectacular,’ says David), some new jetties for our fleet of motoscafi ferries, a new outdoor stage and, yes, a bunch more bars.

“And that’s only about the half of it. Our application to council will be submitted later this year, followed by extensive public consultation. But, in the meantime, if you have any thoughts or questions, we’d love to hear from you. Email info@mona.net.au.”
