It’s a sign of the times, and the evolving business model, when a brand new low cost carrier announces it has signed up with a Global Distribution System (GDS). Such is the case with Scoot, which today announced its fares will be available through Abacus.
In the early days of low cost carriers, the GDS were seen as a needless expenses with the view that all sales should be direct to the consumer, via the web, rather than through costly intermediaries.
But that attitude has changed and now many low cost carriers, even the formerly intransigent Jetstar, are using agents. As Sean Connery once said, Never Say Never.
Scoot, a fully-owned subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, will make its first flight on June 4 between Singapore and Sydney.
