New Zealand visitor numbers for March were down 11.4% over 2010 following the Christchurch earthquake. Key market falls include Australia (down 11.3%), UK (down 25.8%), South Korea (down 38.1%) and Japan (down 35.1%). Bucking the trend was China (up 7.1%), USA (up 1.2%) and Singapore (up 8.7%). Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive Kevin Bowler expects April to be challenging, “I am confident that with the ski season ahead, a host of new air routes linking China and SE Asia to New Zealand, and Rugby World Cup 2011 around the corner, arrivals will return to more normal levels.”
