Qantas will launch free Wi-Fi internet it claims is up to 10x faster than industry standard on its first domestic aircraft later this month with content streaming partners including Foxtel, Netflix and Spotify.
It will be rolled out across the Qantas domestic network of Boeing 737 and Airbus A330 aircraft from mid-year. There are no firm plans at this stage to introduce Wi-Fi on Qantas’ international and regional services.
Qantas says the faster connection are possible because it is using the NBN Sky Muster™ satellite service with the signal reaching the aircraft as it flies through the satellite’s 101 spot beams across Australia.
While the inflight Wi-Fi is free, both Netflix and Spotify require passengers to agree to a 30-day trial subscription before granting access.
