Evidence of changing travel patterns down at the NSW snowfields this past weekend and also of an industry struggling to adapt. Great snow but not so many people. Still plenty of rooms available in Jindabyne, Thredbo and Perisher. Outdated local business practices are partly to blame.
Demand has shifted to shorter stays yet there’s a standard two-night booking minimum with even the most basic places at Jindabyne, 40 minutes from the snow, charging $250+ per night. So, people stay home and save for snow holidays in Japan or North America, where business ex-Australia is booming. Rest assured, this is one trend that’s not going away.
