Tony’s journey from backpacker to industry leader is a tale of adventure, risk-taking, and being in the right place at the right time. After travelling the world, he became a tour guide in the Australian Outback, where he found his passion for delivering amazing experiences in the most remote of settings – and he can still tell a good tale about the first gig that gave him a taste for mixing travel with working for a living.

But the world beyond Australia still beckoned, and after another backpacking adventure through South America, Tony had his sights firmly set on becoming a tour leader in that corner of the globe. He applied for a job with Intrepid Travel, hoping to find his way back to South America as a guide, but instead found himself leading tours in Egypt for five years (and still doesn’t quite know how he ended up on that path!).

But now after getting married on a Red Sea beach in Egypt and faced with the prospect of having to get a ‘real job’, this truly global citizen has settled back in his hometown of Melbourne to lead Urban Adventures. Taking the reins some five years ago, Tony has successfully led this innovative business to where it is today: a profitable start-up in the day tours vertical, turning over USD$6M annually, housed within the walls of the Intrepid Group.

A tour guide to his core, Tony’s real passion is for helping the world’s best guides and customer service professionals to create businesses of their own, in a structured and methodical way that quickly leads to sustainably profitable local tour businesses. These businesses in turn support their communities.

Over just six short years, Urban Adventures has created more than 140 small tour businesses for local people across 6 continents and 90 countries. These businesses in turn all create absolutely unique tour products, based on the concept of FLAVOR: Fun, Local, with insider Access, with great Value, Original, and worthy of Remembering. Urban Adventures currently delivers experiences to an audience of over 125,000 travellers annually.
