Trip Advisor appears to be gearing up to take on fast-growing accommodation rental site Airbnb, sending an email out to key stakeholders over the weekend headlined: Rent out your space on TripAdvisor.
“Turn your home, spare room or vacation house into a goldmine,” the email read.
Curiously, clicking on the email link leads users directly to FlipKey, TripAdvisor’s “vacation rental site” where they are urged to sign up.
“Advertise for free today and reach millions of paying guests waiting to book,” the email urges.
“Pay nothing up front and then just 3% on each booking you receive.”
But there’s no mention in the FlipKey blurb of listing and leasing rooms.
It’s still presenting as a straight down the line vacation rental site.
“FlipKey is a vacation rental marketplace with more than 300,000 rentals around the world,” the site says.
“Find the perfect place to stay for your trip, and get great value along with the space, privacy and amenities of home.”
FlipKey adds that its properties will also be listed on TripAdvisor.
So the question remains: is this just a marketer twisting words or a major shift in direction from the world’s biggest website?
