No two days are the same for Daniel Rosso and that’s what he likes most about his role as GM at the Best Western Plus Hotel Stellar near Hyde Park in Sydney’s CBD.
One day he could be mopping out the basement car park after a summer rain storm, the next working on a long-term business plan for the distinctive 38-room property built in 1917.
Hospitality was an obvious career choice for Daniel, who emigrated to Australia from Uruguay as a 14-year-old with his family.
“Back in Uruguay I actually lived in a hotel run by a family friend for a couple of years, so in some respects I’ve always been in the industry,” he says.
After high school Daniel completed a Bachelor of Hospitality Management at the University of Western Sydney and started working in Food & Beverage.
An early career highlight was managing Pierpont’s Bar at the InterContintental Sydney.
It was one of the city’s first cigar and champagne bars and a well-known haunt of the pinstripe set. For a while there it was the place to be.
“Unfortunately, September 11 happened and the business was never the same,” he remembers.
But when door closes another opens, and in 2003 Daniel got a job managing the café at Best Western Plus Hotel Stellar.
“Then a few months later there was an opportunity to work on the front desk,” he says.
From there Daniel worked his way up the ladder and in 2006 was promoted to General Manager, a role he finds challenging, stimulating and enjoyable.
Daniel has a great relationship with the owner, who transformed the building into accommodation in 1985, and works to three basic rules in managing the property.
“Number one, look after your staff and they will look after you. Two, cleanliness of the rooms is very, very important and, three, treat your customers well, give them recognition and they will keep coming back.”
Daniel says the new Best Western Rewards program is proving particularly effective and that Hotel Stellar has a high repeat visitor ratio with occupancy running at 92% year-round.
“It’s a great hotel and very satisfying job.”
