Australian OTA Webjet has come out of left-field with its €21m purchase of the SunHotels Group in Europe, which has an annual turnover of €90m and recorded pre-tax earnings of €2.6m in 2013.

Webjet describes SunHotels as a “substantial online hotel provider (which) specialises in the provisioning of a wide range of hotels in European resort destinations selling into the major markets of Scandinavia and the United Kingdom.

“This acquisition will form an important cornerstone platform for the immediate extension of product sourcing and distribution opportunities underpinned by more than 6000 directly contracted hotels (plus) a directly owned and scalable technology platform.”

Melbourne-based Webjet has done nothing in Europe before so the acquisition has come as a surprise to many though initial reaction from analysts has been positive.
